SCUBA observations of NGC 6946 ⋆

We present sub-millimetre images of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 at 450 and 850 µm. The observations have been carried out using the scan/map imaging mode of the Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The comparison with a 12 CO(2-1) line emission map from IRAM and with an U-band image, clearly shows that the 850 µm emission is associated w...

Molecular gas in NGC 6946

We present imaging of molecular gas emission in the star-forming spiral galaxy NGC 6946. Our 12 CO(1-0) and 12 CO(3-2) images, made at 22 ′′ resolution with the IRAM 30-m and the Heinrich Hertz 10-m radio telescopes, are the most extensive observations of molecular gas in this galaxy and are among the most extensive observations of molecular gas in any spiral galaxy. The 12 CO(1-0) emission sho...

Telescope Observations of Novae in M 49

A search for novae in M49 (NGC 4472) has been undertaken with the Hubble Space Telescope. A 55-day observing campaign in F555W (19 epochs) and F814W (five epochs) has led to the discovery of nine novae. We find that M49 may be under-abundant in slow, faint novae relative to the Milky Way and M31. Instead, the decline rates of the M49 novae are remarkably similar to those of novae in the LMC. Th...

Ultraviolet Observations of NGC 3516 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope

We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 twice during the flight of Astro-2 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in March 1995. Simultaneous X-ray observations were performed with ASCA. Our far-ultraviolet spectra cover the spectral range 820–1840 Å with a resolution of 2–4 Å. No significant variations were found between the two observations. The total spe...

ROSAT HRI and ASCA Observations of the Spiral Galaxy NGC 6946 and Its Northeast Complex of Luminous SNRs

Analysis of 80 ksec ASCA and 60 ksec ROSAT HRI observations of the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946 are presented. The ASCA image is the first observation of this galaxy above ∼2 keV. Diffuse emission may be present in the inner ∼4 extending to energies above ∼2–3 keV. In the HRI data, fourteen point-like sources are detected, the brightest two being a source very close to the nucleus and a sourc...
